Once upon a time, many years ago, the word “Geek” was meant as an insult. It was often used by bullies to taunt kids that were perhaps smarter than them, but most often it referred to them as “socially inept”. Several years ago, this whole idea changed. It started when a Canadian television show started making “geek” cool. It showcased the kids who were able to think outside of the box. We, for one, are happy to see it.

It’s a Geek’s World

In today’s world, the idea of a “geek” is not a bad thing. We have “The Geek Squad” which can repair or fix your computer. They know a lot about their particular topic of interest and can muddle through virtually anything. If you put in a Google search for “Popular Geeks”, you will find a wide variety of geeky people listed. Each one is “geeks” in their chosen hobby. Crafters, devoted Star Trek fans, musicians, and more are all people who embrace the nickname.

No longer is the word “Geek” the description of someone who is smart, but lacking social skills. People, young and old, are thriving in the new world of Geek-Dom.

Childhood Geek Squads

The Candian television show devoted to our children geeks is designed to show off their coolness. People who want to take part in the challenge are asked several questions about what makes them stand out. They are encouraged to talk about things that they have made, whether it’s a robot or a bubble gum flavored cake. They are asked about certain situations and what they would do to get out of it. What they enjoy doing in their spare time or when they are bored. Scary things that they have done, maybe a science project that didn’t go as well as expected. Whatever the case, no matter how silly it may seem, kids between 8-14 are encouraged to share their geekiest qualities.

The Joys of Being a Geek

There are many reasons adults and kids alike are now embracing the idea of being a geek. Geeks are:

They are the people we want to be leaders in a world that seems crazier than ever. They are the people who will push our technology to the next level. They are the ones who will guide us to an even more impressive future.

Geek is no longer a “dirty word”. Your inner geek is waiting to be set free. Pick a subject, any subject, that you find fascinating. Study it. Take it apart and put it back together again. Learn all that you can. In the end, it may make you a geek, but it will also help you discover a passion that will guide you toward being a better version of yourself.
